What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears — or the right kind of tears — to keep them healthy and comfortable. You might notice burning, stinging, redness, grittiness, watery eyes, or even blurry vision that comes and goes. Some people feel like there’s something stuck in their eye, while others have eyes that water constantly as a response to dryness. Whatever your symptoms, Dry Eye is common — and treatable!

What are Meibomian Glands?

Your Meibomian Glands are tiny oil glands that line the edges of your eyelids. Their job is to produce the oils that keep your tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands get clogged, damaged, or stop working properly, your tears break up faster — leading to dryness, irritation, and discomfort. Healthy glands mean healthy, comfortable eyes.

Our Technology Advantage

Learn How We Diagnose Dry Eye

We use advanced imaging with the MYAH to check your Meibomian Glands — tiny oil glands in your eyelids that keep your tears healthy. If these glands get blocked or damaged, it can lead to Dry Eye. The best part? We show you the images during your exam so you can see exactly what’s going on. (This gland imaging is included with every adult eye exam as part of our premium standard of care.)

At-Home Care Products & In-Office Treatment

Solutions We Offer — Tailored For You

Our preservative-free products: Many eye drops contain preservatives to prevent contamination, but with regular use, those preservatives can actually make Dry Eye worse. They may irritate the eye’s surface, disrupt your natural tear film, or cause inflammation over time. That’s why we only recommend preservative-free eye drops — they’re gentler, safer for frequent use, and a better choice for long-term Dry Eye relief.

Dry Eye Myths & Facts

Fact: Watery eyes are actually a common symptom of Dry Eye! When your eyes are too dry, they sometimes overproduce poor-quality tears as a reflex — but those tears don’t solve the problem.

Fact: While artificial tears can give short-term relief, they don’t treat the underlying cause — especially if your Meibomian Glands aren’t working properly. That’s why a full evaluation is key to finding the right treatment.

Fact: Dry Eye can affect anyone — including young adults. Factors like screen time, contact lens wear, environment, and certain health conditions can all contribute to Dry Eye at any age. Here in Winnipeg, with our dry winters—we are ESPECIALLY susceptible!

Fact: Not all eye drops are created equal. Some contain preservatives that can make Dry Eye worse over time. We only recommend preservative-free options proven to be gentle and effective.
